Background
Customily is a product personalization platform that helps print-on-demand stores offer customized products directly from their online storefronts. Merchants using the platform were increasingly looking for ways to increase their average order value by offering complementary products—such as matching mugs, keychains, or shirts—without forcing the user to re-do the entire personalization process for each item. The lack of this functionality created friction in the buyer journey and limited opportunities for effective upselling or cross-selling.
Core problem
The platform didn’t allow merchants to link different products under a shared personalization logic. This meant that if a customer wanted to buy two related products (e.g., a personalized mug and a matching T-shirt), they had to customize each one separately, which often led to drop-offs, confusion, or inconsistent designs. This not only affected the user experience but also limited revenue opportunities for stores looking to boost their sales through bundled or complementary products.
The solution
To solve this, we introduced a new feature called Selling Groups—a way for merchants to link products that share the same personalization options. I worked closely with product managers and developers to define the behavior, UX flows, and UI of the new feature, ensuring it was intuitive and flexible enough to accommodate different store setups. Selling Groups allow customers to personalize one product and apply the same design choices to others in the group automatically, streamlining the purchase experience and encouraging higher-value orders. We also provided clear configuration tools and in-context guidance to help merchants set up these groups easily.
Results and Impact
Since launch, Selling Groups have shown strong adoption among Customily merchants. Stores that implemented the feature saw a 41% increase in average order value, and a 67% reduction in time spent personalizing complementary products. In the first 3 months, more than 200 stores activated Selling Groups, with over 80% reporting a positive impact on sales. Feedback from both merchants and end users has been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the simplified personalization flow and smoother upsell experience.
